O primeiro transplante de pâncreas no mundo foi realizado em 1966, nos EUA, pelos cirurgiões William Kelly e Richard C. Lillehei, no Hospital da Universidade de Minnesota. Nessa cirurgia, o pâncreas foi transplantado junto com o duodeno, além de um rim.

O primeiro transplante de pâncreas (isolado) do mundo foi efetuado pelo médico brasileiro Edison Dias Teixeira, em 25 maio 1968, no Hospital Silvestre, no Rio de Janeiro. O paciente receptor, Arari Charbel Rios, era um ex-jogador de futebol, diabético, com 28 anos de idade.

Edison Dias Teixeira (nascido em 1933) também realizou os primeiros transplantes renais no Rio de Janeiro, de 1968 até 1976.

Inexplicavelmente, o admirável feito do médico brasileiro parece ter sido esquecido por uma grande parcela de médicos no Brasil e no exterior.

Edison D. Teixeira, que também é cidadão norte-americano, atualmente divide seu tempo entre os Estados Unidos e o Brasil./eat
